How Long Should a Student Resume Be? (Honest Answer for 2026)

Recruiters spend 7 seconds on a first scan. Here's exactly how long your student or entry-level resume should be — and what to cut.

Short answer: one page. Always. If you're a student, a recent grad, or applying to your first few jobs, anything longer hurts you. Here's why — and exactly what to cut to fit.

The 7-second rule

Recruiters spend an average of 7 seconds on a first scan of your resume. They're not reading — they're skimming for evidence you fit the role. Two pages doesn't double your chances; it halves the time spent on each item.

When is a 2-page resume ok?

  • You have 10+ years of directly relevant professional experience.
  • You're applying to academic, research, or federal-government roles (where CVs are expected).
  • You're a senior engineer with a substantial open-source or patent portfolio.

None of these describe most students. Stick to one page.

What to cut first

  1. "References available on request." Recruiters assume this. Delete it.
  2. Middle school activities. Unless genuinely outstanding (national award, founded a charity), leave them out.
  3. Generic skills with no proof. "Hardworking," "team player," "detail-oriented" — invisible.
  4. Old roles older than 7 years (unrelated jobs, rarely relevant for students anyway).
  5. Full street addresses. City and state are enough in 2026.
  6. Anything below 9pt font — if it doesn't fit, cut content; don't shrink type.

Formatting tips to free up space

  • Standard fonts: Calibri, Arial, Georgia, Helvetica. No fancy display fonts.
  • 0.5″–0.75″ margins. Anything tighter looks crammed.
  • Single-line bullets. If a bullet wraps, edit it down — don't leave a 2-word orphan line.
  • No photos, no icons, no two-column "designer" templates — they confuse ATS scanners.
  • Save as PDF, not Word, unless the posting explicitly asks for .docx.
